NPVU - Information Log 2002
9 January 2003: December 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS are now available. Comparison plots are also posted.
January-December 2002 annual statistics are available for all RFCs and the CONUS.
CAUTION: QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potential problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations. This would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country.
10 December 2002: November 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS are now available. Comparison plots are also posted.
CAUTION: QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potenital problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations...this would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country.
9 December 2002: The NPVU log organization has been re-organized and hopefully easier to use. There are now three log types:
(1) an NPVU information/statistics log which lists any updates to the NPVU site or notifications about statistics,
(2) a data log which lists missing data, and
(3) a plot log which lists information about the comparison plots.
Within each of these types, one can choose the desired year log to examine (each year is a link to the appropriate log).
15 November 2002: Per requests from some RFCs, the NPVU web site now displays gif images of the HPC 6-hourly QPF forecasts in the "archive" link on the site. All four HPC forecast cycles are included (00Z, 06Z, 12Z, 18Z). This archive is on a rotating month, from the current day back through the same day last month (older days are subsequently removed). If any older data are needed, feel free to contact the NPVU.
14 November 2002: October 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, as well as the corresponding comparison plots, are now available. Day 3 statistics for the Western RFCs (CBRFC, CNRFC, NWRFC) are now available again, as the HPC has started its Day 3 6-hourly precipitation forecasts for the cold season.
CAUTION: QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potential problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations...this would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country.
15 October 2002: HPC QPF forecasts added to the Data Archive , by popular demand! This will be a "rotating" archive of gif images, such that one month's worth of HPC 6-hourly QPF forecasts are stored and can be accessed. Included are all the HPC forecast cycles: 00Z, 06Z, 12Z, and 18Z. Note that HPC typically gives 6-hourly forecasts through 72 hours from approximately mid-October through mid-May and through 48 hours from approximately mid-May through mid-October at 00Z and 12Z...and through 54 hours all year at 06Z and 18Z.
8 October 2002: September 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, as well as the corresponding comparison plots, are now available. Warm season (April 2002-September 2002) statistics of 6-hourly QPF are also available.
11 September 2002: August 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, as well as the corresponding comparison plots, are now available.
12 August 2002: July 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, as well as the corresponding comparison plots, are now available.
NOTE: Volumetric Bias plots for the continuous statistics are now available, starting with July 2002!
9 July 2002: June 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, as well as the corresponding comparison plots, are now available.
18 June 2002: May 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, as well as the corresponding comparison plots, are now available.
9 May 2002: April 2002 verification statistics of 6-hourly QPF forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, as well as the corresponding comparison plots, are now available.
CAUTION: QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potential problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations...this would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country.
3 May 2002: SIDE-NOTE: For the 6-day period from March 12-17, 2002, the 6-hourly QPE data from WGRFC had to be computed as a summation of available one hour amounts, rather than the usual quality-controlled 6-hour Stage III data. Any differences in accuracy of summing one hour amounts vs. the 6-hour Stage III data may have a *slight* effect on the statistics (March 2002, Oct. 2001-Mar. 2002, and Annual statistics for WGRFC and CONUS), but likely nothing of significance since only a few days had to be done in this manner. The summation of the one hour amounts was used as a "substitute" for those 6 days due to the fact that WGRFC's 6-hour Stage III data were not available during that time (but were available the remainder of March 2002), and we wanted as complete a QPE data set as possible.
23 April 2002: March 2002 QPF verification statistics of 6-hour precipitation forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS, and comparison plots for all RFCs, are now available.
CAUTION: QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potential problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations...this would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country. Six-month cold season (October 2001-March 2002) statistics of 6-hour precipitation forecasts are currently running and will be available shortly.
6 March 2002: February 2002 QPF verification statistics of 6-hour precipitation forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS are now available.
CAUTION: QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potential problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations...this would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country. Comparison plots are in the process of being created and will be available shortly.
8 February 2002: January 2002 QPF verification statistics of 6-hour forecasts for all RFCs and the CONUS are available, as are comparison plots.
CAUTION: QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potential problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations...this would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country.
2 January 2002: CONUS statistics for the continental U.S. as a whole are now available! Monthly verification exists from March-November 2001, but they will be complete starting from January 2001 shortly. Seasonal and annual statistics will also come available soon. Currently, we are computing statistics for the CONUS for the Day 1 period as a whole only (see the " Available Data" link for more information).
CAUTION: As with individual RFC statistics, CONUS QPF verification statistics may be suspect due to potential problems with gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations ...this would be particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country.
