In Tropics and Subtropics, the equivalent potential temperature (THTE) is one of the best tools for boundary detection and identification. Generally, 850 hPa THETA equal or greater than 340K are associated with heavy rainfall events. The higher the THTE, the higher the potential for heavy rainfall. Remember, THTE incorporates sensible temperature as well as temperature variations due to latent heat release (heat from condensation).
This chart shows a boundary that extends from Rio Grande do Sul-Resistencia (Argentina)-Northwestern Argentina.
