SYNOPSIS (VALID FROM MARCH 12 AT 00UTC): AT 200 HPA...THE
SUBTROPICAL RIDGE/BOLIVIAN HIGH CONTINUES CENTERING JUST OFF THE
COAST OF EXTREME NORTHERN CHILE/SOUTHERN PERU. THIS IS VENTILATING
SHORT-LIVED ISOLATED TO SCATTERED DIURNAL CONVECTION IN THE
PERUVIAN-BOLIVIAN ANDES...AND MORE WIDESPREAD DEEP CONVECTION IN
SOUTHWESTERN AMAZONAS-BRASIL INTO NORTHERN LORETO IN PERU. MUCH
BETTER ORGANIZED CONVECTION IS OCCURRING ALONG THE SOUTH ATLANTIC
CONVERGENCE ZONE (SACZ) THAT HAS ESTABLISHED ALONG SOUTHERN
PARA-GOIAS-MINAS GERAIS-RIO DO JANEIRO...IN THE NORTHEASTERN TIER
OF
A LARGE UPPER TROUGH. OTHER REGION WITH SCATTERED BUT WEAKENING
CONVECTION IS OCCURRING ALONG THE AMAZON DELTA.

AT 500 HPA...A LARGE TROUGH IS APPROACHING THE SOUTHERN CONE WHILE
EXTENDING FROM A LOW AT THE BELLINGSHAUSEN SEA TO 30S 95W. THIS
TROUGH IS FOCUSING ITS ENERGY OVER THE BELLINGSHAUSEN SEAN AND THE
DRAKE PASSAGE. TO THE EAST...A RIDGE EXTENDS TO ITS EAST FROM THE
FALKLANDS/MALVINAS SOUTH INTO THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA. IN THE
NORTHERN STREAM...A BROAD RIDGE CENTERS ON A HIGH OFF THE COAST OF
ANTOFAGASTA/IQUIQUE IN NORTHERN CHILE. TO THE EAST...A LOW CENTERS
OFF THE COAST OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL AT 30S 45W. THE TROUGH EXTENDS
TO THE NORTHWEST INTO PARANA/MATO GROSSO DO SUL AND MATO GROSSO.
THIS TROUGH IS FOCUSING ITS ENERGY OFF THE COASTS OF RIO GRANDE DO
SUL AND SANTA CATARINA AND ALONG THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONVERGENCE
ZONE FROM RIO DO JANEIRO/MINAS GERAIS INTO GOIAS/NORTHEASTERN MATO
GROSSO.

AT LOW LEVELS...A 976 HPA LOW AT 65S 71W EXTENDS A FRONT INTO 60S
71W...A 976 HPA LOW AT 58S 75W...52S 75W...A 1004 HPA LOW AT 47S
79W...41S 87W. A 1010 HPA LOW AT 43S 57W EXTENDS A FRONT INTO 40S
59W...A 1010 HPA LOW AT 39S 63W. THUNDERSTORMS WERE OCCURRING
ALONG THIS BOUNDARY IN NORTHERN PATAGONIA. THE SOUTH AMERICAN
CONVERGENCE ZONE EXTENDS FROM RIO DO JANEIRO ACROSS 20S 44W...15S
49W...13S 53W. WIDESPREAD CONVECTION WAS OCCURRING ALONG THIS
BOUNDARY.
