GFS DATA AT FTPPRD.NCEP.NOAA.GOV/PUB/DATA/NCCF/COM/GFS/PROD/

SYNOPSIS (VALID FROM OCTOBER 17 AT 00UTC): THE ANALYSIS AT 200 HPA
SHOWS A BROAD RIDGE OVER THE EASTERN TROPICAL PACIFIC THAT ANCHORS
ON A CLOSED HIGH NEAR 09S 87W. THIS HIGH ALSO EXTENDS A RIDGE TO
THE EAST ACROSS NORTHERN CHILE/SOUTHERN BOLIVIA-PARAGUAY TO
SOUTHEAST BRASIL. THIS RIDGE UNDERCUTS A TROUGH TO THE NORTH...AS
THE LATTER EXTENDS ALONG 20S 30W...18S 40W...10S 52W...TO AMAZONAS
IN WESTERN BRASIL. IN THIS PATTERN...TROPICAL CONVECTION CONFINES
TO CONTINENTAL AREA TO THE NORTH OF 10S...WITH MOST INTENSE
BETWEEN PARA AND AMAZONAS. SCATTERED SHOWERS WERE ALSO EVIDENT
ACROSS CENTRAL-NORTHERN PERU TO ECUADOR/SOUTHERN COLOMBIA.

THE 250 HPA JET ANALYSIS SHOWS THE SOUTHERN POLAR WITH ENTRANCE AT
46S 98W...ALONG A 156KT MAXIMUM AT 40S 92W...37S 86W...41S
79W...EXITING AT 44S 70W. THE NORTHERN POLAR LIES ALONG 38S
120W...38S 111W...40S 100W...35S 93W...EXITING AT 32S 87W. IT
REFORMS AT 33S 81W...ALONG 39S 70W...A 123KT MAXIMUM AT 40S
51W...40S 37W...EXITING AT 33S 18W. THE SUBTROPICAL JET LIES ALONG
15S 119W...20S 110W...A 127KT MAXIMUM AT 24S 92W...28S
78W...URUGUAY...33S 42W...EXITING AT 28S 26W.

AT 500 HPA...A NORTH-TO-SOUTH RIDGE EXTENDS ALONG 100W TO 60S.
EAST OF THIS AXIS...A SHORT WAVE TROUGH ON THE SOUTHERN STREAM
ENTERED THE BELLINGSHAUSEN SEA/ANTARCTIC PENINSULA...WHILE FARTHER
NORTH...A SHORT WAVE TROUGH EXTENDS FROM 48S 87W...ALONG 41S
89W...TO 28S 90W. THIS IS FOCUSING SHORT WAVE ENERGY ACROSS
SOUTHERN/CENTRAL CHILE INTO ARGENTINA. FARTHER EAST...SHORT WAVE
PERTURBATIONS ON THE NORTHERN STREAM EXITED ARGENTINA...WITH ONE
ALONG 57W AND THE OTHER ALONG 45W. THESE PROVIDE SUPPORT TO AN
AREA OF ORGANIZED CONVECTION ACROSS SOUTHERN BRASIL-CORRIENTES IN
ARGENTINA.

THE SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A 984 HPA LOW AT 60S 50W EXTENDING A
FRONT ALONG 58S 51W...57S 59W...A 994 HPA LOW AT 56S 66W...54S
65W...TIERRA DEL FUEGO...A 1004 HPA LOW AT 53S 76W...50S 80W.
SHOWERS WERE OCCURRING IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS IN TIERRA DEL FUEGO. A
1006 HPA LOW AT 45S 81W EXTENDED A FRONT ALONG 41S 78W...33S 84W.
TWO 1013 HPA HIGHS CENTERED IN ARGENTINA...ONE AT 36S 61W AND
ANOTHER AT 32S 62W. A 1004 HPA LOW AT 41S 44W EXTENDED A FRONT
ALONG 39S 43W...36S 46W...A 1010 HPA LOW AT 34S
52W...URUGUAY-BRASIL BORDER...CORRIENTES...SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO IN
ARGENTINA. A 998 HPA CHACO LOW CENTERED AT 23S 62W. SCATTERED
